Since 2021 he is Head of Cardiovascular Surgery at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milano, Directore of the Valve Clinic.
Professor Maisano qualified in medicine at the Catholic University in Rome in 1990, he completed a postgraduate fellowship in University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1994, and a master specialization in Cardiac Surgery in 1995 at University La Sapienza in Rome.
Professor Maisano began his career in 1995 in Brescia as staff surgeon in the cardiac surgery division (Chair O. Alfieri) and followed prof Alfieri at San Raffaele University Hospital in Milan as Senior Staff Heart Surgeon from 1997, developing large and complete experience in the surgical and endovascular treatment of cardiovascular diseases. During the Milano experience had the opportunity of being cross-trained in interventional cardiology by Antonio Colombo. Between 2015 and 2020 he has been Full professor of Cardiac Surgery and Director of the department at University Hospital of Zurich.
He covers different international academic and scientific advisory roles, membership in professional associations, review and editorial boards activities.
Professor Maisano’s main area of interest is focused on heart valve treatment and innovative technologies, ranging from surgical to catheter-based therapies, and focusing on training and education.
In 2013 he became Senior Staff and Head of the surgical transcatheter unit at the Clinic of Cardiovascular Surgery of the University Hospital in Zurich, where, in 2014, he was appointed as Full Professor and Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery.
He extended his vision of Heart Team approach into the clinical practice, leading a team able to manage the full spectrum of multidisciplinary cardiovascular therapies and research programs, from heart failure to valvular therapies.
He has filed more than 24 patents, and founded multiple start-up companies in the field of cardiovascular medicine contributing to a number of surgical and interventional devices currently available for clinical use.
